Wartburg Women's Outdoor Track & Field Repeats as National Champions

LACROSSE, Wis.-- The Wartburg women’s outdoor track and field team stands as National Champions for the fourth time in program history as it won the team title with 46 points as it held a three-point lead over second place UW-Oshkosh.

This marked the third title in five years for the Knights and repeated as National Champions for the first time in school history.

Trophy presentation

"This whole weekend has been a blessing," said head coach Marcus Newsom. "This Championship was the result of an entire team's effort as we scored points in a variety of events. Many people doubted us or even counted us out of the team race after what we lost to graduation this year, but what our whole team did this weekend is special."

The team race was tied at 43 points between the Orange and Black and UW-Oshkosh coming into the triple jump. Senior Monique Davisson (Cedar Rapids) sealed the win with her sixth-place finish in the event as she jumped 12.15m (39’10.5”). Interview

The Knights had three individuals, all non-seniors, finish as National Runners-Up.

"This is very exciting for the future of our program and those three were a huge part of our success this weekend," said Newsom.

In the 3000m steeplechase, junior Sammi Bruett (Urbandale) finished as the National Runner-up with her time of 10:26.60. She broke her own school record (10:38.13) which she set last season. Bruett is now the first person in school history to not only earn two All-American honors in this event on the men’s and women’s side, but did it in two straight years.

Bruett's finish launched Wartburg into second from 14th on the team standings.

In the shot put, sophomore Kayla Hemann (Stacyville) also finished as the National Runner-Up with her throw of 14.68m (48’2”). Senior Britlyn Sieck (Fayette) took 12th (13.55m; 44’5.5”).

The 4x100m relay team of Tashina McAllister, Monique Davisson, Sarah Boraas and Libbey Schubert took sixth (47.12) to earn the eighth straight All-American honors for the program.

Later in the 100m hurdles, McAllister took fifth (14.42) to earn her second straight All-American honor in this event.
After taking third a year ago in the 400m hurdles, McAllister finished as the National Runner-Up (59.65) to earn her second straight All-American honors and second in program history. She broke her own school record in this event (60.23). Interview

In the 400m dash, senior Kendra Kregel (Delhi) took fifth (55.79) to also earn her second consecutive All-American honor in this event.
