John Thompson

John Thompson was hired in June of 2021 as the 11th Wartburg women's golf head coach. 

Thompson, who graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 2012, brings experience as a golf professional at local golf courses as well as coaching experience with the Northern Iowa men's and women's golf teams. While spending three seasons as a volunteer assistant coach with the UNI men's and women's golf teams upon graduation, Thompson helped guide the Panther men improve from a ninth place finish at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships in 2013 to a second place team finish at the MVC Championships in 2015, the program's best finish since 2002.

Thompson currently serves as the Head Golf Professional at Prairie Links Golf Course in Waverly, Iowa. He completed the PGA Professional Golf Management (PGA PGM) Program, earning his status as a PGA Member, in March 2025.

He has previously served as the Golf Professional at Red Carpet Golf Course in Waterloo, Iowa. Thompson provides golf instruction, course management, tournament coordination, repairing and fitting clubs, and more.

Thompson was the General Manager at Lebowski's Rock and Bowl in Washington, Iowa, from 2016-21, managing customer service and company personnel. In addition, he was the Golf Professional at Washington Golf and Country Club, teaching lessons and golf camps. In 2017, he joined the board and served as the tournament director and treasurer. 

From 2012-16, Thompson gained experience prior as the Assistant Golf Professional at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He helped oversee all aspects of the course operations, including coordination of the Iowa Junior Golf Academy along with Pheasant Ridge and Iowa PGA Drive, Chip & Putt programs. 

A native of Evansdale, Iowa, Thompson was a four-year member of the UNI men's golf team and graduated with a degree in General Studies with an emphasis on business, education, communications, and management.
