WAVERLY, Iowa-- Wartburg College Director of Athletics Rick Willis and head volleyball coach Jennifer Walker have announced that associate head coach Doug Frazell has been promoted to co-head coach of the Knights’ volleyball program.
“We are excited to expand Doug’s role within our program,” said Willis. “His presence has had a significant impact on our program over the past three years, and we look forward to building on that momentum.”
“I feel this is the right move in advancing our volleyball program forward,” said Walker. “Doug is an outstanding volleyball coach and has been integral in creating a team that is competitive at the national level. He is completely committed to challenging our athletes to become the best volleyball players they can be. I enjoy working with Doug and look forward to many more years of collaborating together in an effort to make Wartburg Volleyball a consistent national contender.”
Frazell has been at Wartburg since the 2010 season. Over the past three seasons, the Knights have made two appearances in the NCAA Tournament and have claimed the conference tournament title twice (2010 and 2012). In addition, the 2012 team also won the regular-season title after it finished a perfect 7-0 in conference play.
The 2012 team set the school record for wins as the Orange and Black finished 32-6 on the year. Wartburg has been ranked in the AVCA Top 25 poll consistently over the past three years and received the No. 15 ranking in the final 2012 poll.
One of Frazell’s largest responsibilities with Wartburg’s program is the development of the setters. Junior Ramey Sieck (Fayette) was named an AVCA Second-team All-American and returns for her senior season this fall.
Prior to coming to Wartburg, Frazell was the head volleyball coach at West Des Moines Valley and led the Class 4A Tigers to six straight 25-or-more win seasons and three Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union state tournament berths in seven seasons. Prior to taking the post at WDM Valley, Frazell was a graduate assistant coach at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the spring of 2003 and an assistant coach at Central College of Pella from 1999-2002.
"I’m really appreciative of the opportunity Coach Willis and Coach Walker have given me in becoming the co-head volleyball coach,” said Frazell. “Wartburg College is a special place to be a student-athlete and my family and I are so thankful to work with the group of young people that we do. I’m excited about the future of the program and what is ahead for our current players, as well as teams for years to come.”
