GRINNELL, Iowa—The No. 1 ranked Wartburg College women’s indoor track and field team won its third NCAA National Championship in program history with its meet-record 99 points Saturday.

“I am very proud of what we accomplished today,” said head coach Marcus Newsom. “This process started four years ago and it is pretty special to win a National Championship.”

This marks the third program title for the Knights in the last four years.

“What’s also special is that everyone leaves an All-American,” he continued. “All 12 of our women competitors and our male qualifier, Jonas Elusme, all leave with hardware this weekend.

“These athletes take pride in our tradition as they learned from the upper classmen like the Hannah Bakers and the Jenny Kordicks and they just ran with it,” commented Newsom. “I consider myself a pretty humble guy and I coach that way. Although, I’m very competitive and they are too. We are all thankful for this opportunity.

“This group loves to compete but we also stayed humble and represented not only our institution, but the entire state of Iowa extremely well,” he continued. “Our Wartburg Track and Field family was incredibly supportive and family is important to me. (The NCAA camera crew) showed the back of our family t-shirts and the crowd went crazy, but that saying is very true.”

The Orange and Black concluded the final day of the championships with two individual National Titles and one relay title.

Senior Nevada Morrison (Maywood, Ill.) won the 400m dash with her time of 55.80. With the win, she and twin sister Skye made NCAA history as each won individual titles, which was also one of their season goals.

Senior Laura Sigmund (Stanhope) later won the 5,000m run (17:01.82).

The day concluded with the victory in the 4x400m relay as S. Morrison, Faith Burt, Kendra Kregal and N.
Morrison finished in a time of 3:45.66.

This win was also significant as N. Morrison concludes her indoor career as a four-time National Champion in this event.
