Toohey, Topp join Wartburg staff

Wartburg College Director of Athletics and head football coach Rick Wills has announced that Patrick Toohey and Jake Topp have been named assistant coaches.

Toohey ’05, a former Knights player, replaces Reed Hoskins who left to become the offensive coordinator at UW-La Crosse in April. He will coach the offensive line and serve as recruiting coordinator. Toohey spent the 2005 season coaching the defensive line at UW-Whitewater before returning to Wartburg in the same role for the 2006 and 2007 seasons. He has most recently served as the offensive line coach/run game coordinator at Randolph-Macon College in Virginia. Toohey helped guide Randolph-Macon to three consecutive winning seasons including an ODAC Championship and NCAA playoff appearance in 2008. His 2010 offense averaged 225 yards rushing and 41 points per game. His wife, Brooke (Rausch) Toohey, is a 2006 Wartburg graduate.

“We are excited and fortunate to welcome Patrick back to Wartburg,” Willis said. “His experience, expertise and familiarity make him a perfect fit for our current situation.”

Topp enjoyed a successful playing career at Grand Valley State University where he was part of four conference championship and two national championship teams. His coaching career has included one season as a graduate assistant at GVSU and one season as the offensive line coach at Minnesota State-Moorhead. Jake will coach the defensive line.

“We are pleased to have Jake join our staff,” Willis said. “His passion and enthusiasm for football and coaching will be a great addition.”

Wartburg finished the 2010 season ranked No. 11 in the country. They open the 2011 campaign at Monmouth College of Illinois Sept. 3.
