Wendt Named Academic All-American

Katy Wendt was named an Academic All-American
WAVERLY, Iowa-- For the second straight year, senior Katy Wendt (Bettendorf) has been named a Capital One Division III Academic All-American, the CoSIDA (Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America) national office announced tonight.

Wendt becomes the first repeat women's soccer honoree since 1997 for Wartburg as Sacha Riddel received this honor in 1996 and 1997. Wendt is the 14th Wartburg student-athlete to be a multiple selection.

Wendt was the only repeat selection on the 11-member Academic All-American team and the only player from the Iowa Conference to receive this honor.

A psychology major with a 3.99 G.P.A., is a four-time First-team All-Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection and was named as the IIAC's Most Valuable Player in 2011, the first honoree from Wartburg since 2008.

"Although balancing soccer and school was challenging at times, I think I succeeded at it because I never really considered it 'work', " said Wendt. "I wanted to perform my best both on the soccer field and in the classroom so I was simply following my passions in life.  Education is very important to me, but I also have a true love for the game of soccer so I committed myself 100% to both realms.
"

"Katy is a dedicated and gifted student-athlete," said head coach Tiffany Pins. "This honor is a testament to the hard work Katy has put in the classroom and on the field."

This season, Wendt scored eight goals with a team-high 13 assists this season as Wartburg compiled a 17-2-3 record, earning an NCAA Division III Tournament berth.

Wendt finished her career with 32 assists, the second highest mark in school history.

This is the 76th time a Wartburg student-athlete has been named an Academic All-American.
