WAVERLY (IOWA) - A group of seven former standouts is slated for induction into the Wartburg College Athletic Hall of Fame this fall. The ceremony and dinner will take place Saturday, Oct. 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the Knights Ballroom of the Saemann Student Center as part of Homecoming 2010 festivities.
The athletic “Hall “Class of 2010 includes:
Gary Arends ’94 – His claim to fame was on the track. Arends still holds the school’s outdoor men’s high jump record at six feet, nine inches and indoor record at six feet, 11 inches as part of a career in which he was all-Iowa Conference and an NCAA Division III All-American in 1992. He was a combined eight-time letterman in both sports. Arends is a doctor of osteopathy in the Los Angeles, California, area.
Sarah (Nederhoff) Buhman ’99 – Buhman helped lead the volleyball program to four straight 20-plus win seasons including back-to-back NCAA Division III tournament berths in 1997 and 1998. She was a three-time first team all-Iowa Conference honoree and was the team Most Valuable Player in each of her four years. A member of the volleyball “Legends of Knights Gymnasium” team, she ranks second in career assists. Buhman resides in Sumner where she is a Title One reading teacher for ages kindergarten to third grade.
Jane (Deike) Fryda ’92 – Fryda also starred in track and field for the Knights. She was an Iowa Conference champion in the discus in 1992 and was a two-time All-American, placing eighth in 1991 and second in 1992. She still holds the women’s school record in the event at 152 feet, six and a half inches. Fryda resides in Burlington, Wis., where she serves as chaplain for the Wheatland Fire and Silver Lake Rescue squad and is an office and sales manager.
Dawn (Matthias) Posekany ’97 – Posekany was a three-sport athlete at Wartburg playing softball, women’s basketball and volleyball during her career. Her bailiwick came in softball where she was all-Iowa Conference in 1994 and 1996 and the team Most Valuable Player in 1996. She hit .300 or better in two of her four years and recorded a high-water mark of 28 RBIs in 1994 while playing on a team that finished 29-14. Posekany garnered a combined eight letters in her three sports. She resides in Solon where she is a high school science teacher.
Trevor Shannon ’99 – Shannon rewrote the Knights’ football rushing records during his collegiate career. As part of a resume that included two first team all-Iowa Conference awards, two all-region honors and three offensive Most Valuable Player awards, he went over 1,000 yards in three of his four seasons and still holds 11 school records including a remarkable 26 touchdowns in 1998. Shannon also starred on the track earning indoor and outdoor All-American honors in 1998 and team Most Valuable Player honors in 1999 and is part of a school record in the outdoor 4x200 meter relay. He resides in Bloomington, Minn., and is a corporate controller for Twin City Fan Companies.
Kevin Skartvedt ’92 – Another gridiron standout, he was a first team all-American in 1991 and earned first team all-Iowa Conference awards in 1990 and 1991 as a member of the offensive line. The four-year starter was also voted him a team captain in 1991. He and his line mates saw plenty of success in their careers blocking for three 1,000-yard rushers. Skartvedt resides in Indianapolis, Ind., where he is an assistant store manager at Menards.
Tom Smith ’98 – Smith’s claim to fame was on the wrestling mat at Wartburg. He was a three-time All-American, two-time NCAA Division III champion and wrestled on the 1996 national championship squad. A three-time all-Iowa Conference honoree, Smith was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the 1997 conference championships. The 1996 U.S. Olympic freestyle trials qualifier adds the Wartburg College athletic Hall of Fame honor to his 2004 Division III National Wrestling Coaches Association honor. A former Knights’ wrestling assistant coach, he resides in Bedford where he is a Spanish and ELL teacher.
