Day Three Men's Recap

MEN’S HAMMER
Wisconsin-LaCrosse’s Kevin Becker earned the 2005 men’s hammer throw title with a Division III season-best throw of 208-10; he finished second in the event last year. Uzoma Orji, a junior from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, finished second at 189-2, while Willamette’s Nate Matlock was third at 188-4, marking the second consecutive year that Matlock finished with All-America honors.

MEN’S 400-METER RELAY
New Jersey City (Sherron Bullock, Anthony Campbell, Ronald Hussey, Anthony Miles) won the men’s 400-meter relay with a Division III season-best time of 40.31, which also set a Waltson-Hoover Stadium record. The second and third place teams also posted Division III season-best times of 40.47 and 40.56, respectively, as Nebraska Wesleyan (Gordie Coffin, Matt Turman, Jeff Aldrich, Bret Blake) finished second and Williams (Andrew Arons, Drew Raab, Max Mogosi, John Symanski) took third.

MEN’S 1,500-METER RUN
Nick Symmonds (Willamette) won the men’s 1,500-meter run in 3:54.20, setting a Walston-Hoover Stadium record. Aaron Dye, a junior at Nebraska Wesleyan, took second at 3:54.61; he finished sixth in the event last year. Keene State’s Dave Bridgewater was third with a time of 3:55.66 after a fifth-place finish in 2004.

MEN’S 110-METER HURDLES
Richard Harris (Buffalo State) won the men’s 110-meter hurdles in 14:12 which was a Division III season best and also set a new Walston-Hoover Stadium record. Paul Klemic (Richard Stockton) took second with a time of 14.22 He also took the long jump National title on Thursday. Greg Bolton (Christopher Newport) finished third in this race with a time of 14.42.

MEN’S 400-METER DASH
Lincoln University’s Bobby Young won the 400-meter dash title with a 45.95 performance, a Division III season best and Walston-Hoover Stadium record. Nate Olson (Wisconsin-LaCrosse) took second for the second consecutive year, turning in a time of 46.28, while Wartburg’s Josh Hauser, a junior, finished third with a time of 47.28.

MEN’S 100-METER DASH
Augustine Schmader (Lincoln) won the men’s 100-meter dash in a time of 10.53, bettering the Walston-Hoover Stadium record. John Biacofsky (Mt. Union) finished second at 10.63, while third place went to Howard Payne’s Greg Nixon, who ran a 10.66.

MEN’S 800-METER RUN
Junior Nick Symmonds (Willamette) won his third consecutive men’s 800-meter title with a time of 1:49.87, setting a Walston-Hoover Stadium record. He ran 1:49.51 in 2003 and 1:51.87 in 2004 to earn the National Championship each year of his collegiate career. Jeff Zoda from the College of New Jersey finished second (1:51.35), while Eddie Papalia (Haverford) took third at 1:52.04. Two 2004 All-America honorees repeated with top-eight finishes Saturday. Blake Henning finished fourth (1:52.20) and Colin McKean (St. Norbert) was eighth (1:56.47).

MEN’S 400-METER HURDLES
Blake Boma (Monmouth) won the men’s 400-meter hurdles with a Division III season-best time of 51.78; he owned the season’s best time prior to Saturday’s competition (52.04). Boma was a 2004 All-America honoree in the 400 hurdles, finishing third (52.32). Jeff Jasmin (Lincoln) finished second in the event with a time of 52.26, while Darren DeAngelis (Elizabethtown) took third at 53.04. Kevin Bright (Middlebury), a 2004 All-America honoree, was fifth (53.45).

MEN’S 200-METER DASH
Freshman Greg Nixon (Howard Payne) won the men’s 200-meter dash with a wind-adjusted time of 20.96. Bobby Young, a sophomore from Lincoln who won the 400-meter dash earlier on Saturday, took second at 21.09. Wisconsin-LaCrosse’s Nate Olson, who took second to Young in the 400-meter dash, finished third with a time of 21.14. 2004 National Champion Bret Blake (Nebraska Wesleyan) finished fourth (21.37), while 2004 All-America honoree Nick Wetherby (Cortland SUNY) was eighth (22.20).

MEN’S JAVELIN
Kristoph Baker (Middlebury) posted a 205-7 throw in the men’s javelin to win the 2005 title. He finished fifth in the event in 2004. Bruce Zapasnik (UMass-Dartmouth) took second with a throw of 205-1, while Jim Roy (Baldwin-Wallace) was third at (204-6). 2004 National Champion Matt Gassaway (George Fox) finished fourth at 202-10.

MEN’S 5,000-METER RUN
Defending National Champion Josh Moen (Wartburg) grabbed the 2005 men’s 5,000-meter run title with a time of 14:36.22. Moen and Widener’s Macharia Yuot battled throughout most of the race, just as they did in the men’s 10K Thursday night with the same result. Moen edged Yuot by just a second in Saturday’s race, as Yuot, who took third in 2004, finished at 14:37.83. Ted Turner (Geneseo SUNY) took third (14:44.16).

MEN’S TRIPLE JUMP
Yudehwheh Gbaa (Lincoln) won the men’s triple jump with a leap of 49-6.25, a Division III season best and Walston-Hoover Stadium record. The freshman beat out returning 2004 All-America honoree Fred Jones (Tufts), who recorded a jump of 49-1.75 Saturday. Bryson Taylor, a senior from Greenville, took third at 48-11. Dubuque’s DeAndre Bovan finished fourth at 48-10.25.

MEN’S 1,600-METER RELAY
Wisconsin-LaCrosse (Jeremy Deterville, Nate Olson, Eric Svestka, Tony Marcinek) won the men’s 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:08.71, giving the UWL team its third consecutive national 1,600-meter relay title. Lincoln University (Bobby Young, Augustine Schmader, Keko Goldman, Lance Wigfall) took second with a time of 3:09.86. Nebraska Wesleyan (Ben Thayer, Bret Blake, Evan Knight, Chris Wolf) finished third at 3:12.24.
