Day One Recap

One national record and seven venue records were set as eight National Champions were crowned on the first day of the 2005 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field National Championship at Walston-Hoover Stadium on the campus of Wartburg College on Thursday.

Williams (Mass.) junior Dan Austin set an NCAA Division III Championship and a Stadium record in the discus with a throw of 59.76 meters, a mark that provisionally qualifies him for the U.S. Nationals. He broke the previous meet record (58.28 meters) set in 1983 by Hamline’s Mike Manders.

Wisconsin-Oshkosh junior Robyn Jaroki threw a Division III season-best and Stadium record 52.34 meters in the women’s discus to win the event by 5.35 meters and improved on her third-place national finish a year ago. Amherst senior Carter Hamill and Wisconsin-Oshkosh junior Robyn Jaroki set Division III season-best and Stadium records in winning national titles in the women’s 10,000-meters and women’s discus, respectively. Hamill ran a time of 34:00.43 and Jaroki recorded a throw of 52.34 meters.

Also setting Walston-Hoover Stadium records and winning National Championships were Wisconsin-Eau Claire junior Stephanie Barnes, who won a three-way jump-off to capture the women’s pole vault title (3.72 meters); Richard Stockton junior Paul Klemic in the men’s long jump (7.67 meters); St. Thomas (Minn.) senior Andretta Colley in the women’s long jump (5.92 meters) and Wartburg senior Josh Moen in the men’s 10,000-meters (30:31.45).
